Child with dry winter skin, pediatric dermatology at The Skin Sensé Hyderabad

Why children's skin struggles in winter

Hyderabad's winter is mild, but from November to February the air is drier, mornings are cooler and children spend more time in hot baths and warm clothes. A child's skin barrier is thinner than an adult's and loses water faster, so dryness, itching and rashes are common at this time of year.

Common winter rashes in children

Dry skin (xerosis)

Rough, flaky skin on the shins, arms and cheeks, sometimes with mild itching. It usually improves within a week or two of regular moisturising.

Eczema flares

Children who have eczema (atopic dermatitis) often flare in winter. Look for red, itchy patches in the folds of the elbows and knees, on the neck, or on the cheeks in babies. Scratching can make the skin thick, darker or broken.

Chapped lips and lip-licker's rash

A red ring around the mouth from repeated licking of dry lips. A plain lip balm and breaking the licking habit usually help.

Woollen clothing irritation

Wool and rough fabrics can cause itching and small bumps where they touch the skin. A soft cotton layer underneath usually solves this.

Simple home care that works for most children

  • Keep baths short, five to ten minutes, in lukewarm water.
  • Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser only where needed.
  • Pat the skin dry and apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser within three minutes, then again before bed.
  • Dress your child in soft cotton next to the skin, with warmer layers on top.
  • Keep nails short to limit damage from scratching.
  • Avoid home remedies such as lemon, toothpaste or strong oils on broken skin.

When to see a pediatric dermatologist

Book a visit if:

  • the rash has not improved after two weeks of regular moisturising
  • itching is waking your child at night or affecting school
  • the skin is cracked, oozing, crusted or painful
  • rashes keep returning every winter
  • you are unsure whether it is eczema, a fungal infection or an allergy

At the visit, the dermatologist examines the skin, asks about soaps, clothes, diet and family history of allergies, and gives a written plan. For most children this means a suitable moisturiser, a short course of a medicated cream if needed, and changes to daily skin care.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use coconut oil on my child's dry skin in winter?

Plain coconut oil can soften mildly dry skin for many children. If the skin is red, cracked, weeping or very itchy, it may be eczema, and a fragrance-free medicated moisturiser chosen by a doctor usually works better.

How often should I bathe my child in winter?

A short daily bath of five to ten minutes in lukewarm water is fine for most children. Avoid hot water and strongly scented soaps, and apply moisturiser within three minutes of drying the skin.

Is winter eczema contagious?

No. Eczema is not an infection and cannot spread to other children. If eczema patches become crusted, yellow or painful, they may have picked up an infection and should be checked.

When should a baby with a rash see a doctor quickly?

See a doctor the same day if a baby under three months has a rash with fever, or if any child has a rash with fever, blisters, spreading redness, or is unusually drowsy or unwell.
